How Often Should You Change an HVAC Air Filter?

There is no single replacement interval that fits every house.

Start with the filter manufacturer's guidance

The replacement interval printed by the filter manufacturer is a useful starting point, but it is not a guarantee that the filter will last that long in every home.

How quickly a filter loads with dust depends on the home, the HVAC system, the season, and how much the equipment runs.

Why some homes need changes more often

A filter may need attention sooner when:

  • The HVAC system runs for long periods.
  • The home has pets.
  • There is ongoing renovation or construction dust.
  • Windows or doors are frequently open during dusty or high-pollen conditions.
  • The home has several occupants or high indoor activity.

Inspect instead of relying only on the calendar

Look at the filter periodically, especially when you are learning how quickly your home loads one. A visibly dirty filter or one that has been in service longer than its manufacturer's recommended interval deserves attention.

The goal of a reminder is not to replace a filter unnecessarily. It is to make sure the filter gets checked before it is forgotten.

Record the replacement date

Once you replace the filter, record the date. After several changes, your own maintenance history becomes more useful than a generic schedule because it reflects how your specific home and system behave.

This is the kind of history HomeOS is designed to keep with the equipment itself.
